Diadromous Neritid Gastropods: Examining How Water Velocity, Distance from Ocean, and Location on Substrate Shape Stream Communities
نویسنده
چکیده
The species composition, size distribution and abundance of diadromous neritid gastropods were studied in two coastal streams on Mo’orea French Polynesia, from October to November 2010. Five species of the family Neritidae were examined: Neritina auriculata Lamarck, Neritina canalis Lamarck, Neritina turrita Gmelin, Clithon spinosa Budgin, and Septaria porcellana Linnaeus. Sampling occurred at increasing distances from the ocean. Water velocity, depth, and shell height was measured, location on substrate was recorded for each species, and comprehensive site surveys were conducted. Species composition changed at increasing distances from the ocean, with percentages of Neritina canalis increasing when moving upstream in the Amehiti River and percentages of Neritina auriculata decreasing when moving upstream in the Uufau River. Average shell heights were larger in upstream reaches and smaller in downstream reaches. Abundances of neritids decreased at water velocities greater than 0-2 m/s. Neritina auriculata and Neritina canalis were both found on the sides and bottoms of substrate.

Thermostable direct hemolysin-producing strain of Vibrio parahaemolyticus was not detected from the alimentary tract of 7 neritid gastropods including Clithon retropictus at 9 estuaries of Southwest Islands in Japan in the present study. The strain has been detected from C. retropictus at 2 estuaries facing The Sea of Japan but not at 2 estuaries facing The Seto Inland Sea and The Pacific Ocean...

Abstract Several methods have been developed such as experimental methods, numerical and computational models for studying the prediction of water level. The purpose of this research is to evaluate and verification Telemac's numerical tidal model in Bushehr Bay waters using measured data. In this regard, the Telemac 2D module has been used to simulate the tide in a A course, 15 days from 01/08...
متن کاملNumerical and Experimental Analysis of the Effect of Flow Discharge Ratio on Flow Separation at 45 Degree Open End Water Intake
Flow separation at water intake is the main cause of head loss and flow discharge reduction.
As a result, study of shape and size of separation is very essential when designing an optimum water intake. Water intake is normally built with a 90 degree angle to the main channel flow direction. However, the flow structure in this type of water intake consists of large separation size along wit...

متن کاملCorrelated Evolution between Mode of Larval Development and Habitat in Muricid Gastropods
Larval modes of development affect evolutionary processes and influence the distribution of marine invertebrates in the ocean. The decrease in pelagic development toward higher latitudes is one of the patterns of distribution most frequently discussed in marine organisms (Thorson's rule), which has been related to increased larval mortality associated with long pelagic durations in colder water...
